9:30am – 3:00pm
Gather up your little naturalist and slither out to the Amarillo Zoo to share the day with snakes, lizards, tortoises and toads! Bring the family out for fun, entertainment and hands on encounters with reptiles and amphibians from around the world. This day of scaly and slimy fun is geared towards the entire family and is included in the general admission to the Zoo.
Reptiles and amphibians are often portrayed as creepy, dangerous and aggressive creatures but contrary to what people think, these animals play a vital role in our environment and are generally shy and reclusive. During the event you can learn about the truths and misconceptions that surround reptiles and amphibians like: do snakes chase people? What is a turtle’s shell made out of? What is the largest species of snake in the world? Plus much more! Live animal encounters and keeper chats will include pythons, giant tortoise, huge toads and others.
Excitement awaits you…..
- Join the “I Touched a Snake Club”
- Sample a Lizard lunch of crispy fried crickets, grilled mealworms or poached waxworms – yum yum!
- Learn about venomous snakes and poisonous toads
- See the skeleton of the world’s largest species of frog – the massive Goliath frog
- See the world’s largest species of toad – the plate-sized Marine toad
- SSSSSuper cool snake crafts to make and take home

Join us for the Amarillo Zoo’s 60th Birthday Celebration!
Saturday, May 16th from 6:00pm-8:00pm
2015 is an important year for us at the Amarillo Zoo! It all began in 1955 (we were originally known as Storyland Zoo) and since then we’ve continued to grow and get better with each year. On Saturday, May 16th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm we are staying open late to celebrate our 60th birthday and we would like to invite everyone to come out and share the evening with us. During the last 60 years the Zoo staff has worked hard to make the Amarillo Zoo something the community can be proud of. We would like for you to join us for a celebration of where we were….where we are now…and where we are going.
There will be an assortment of special presentations and activities throughout the Zoo plus as a nostalgic look back to 1955 with FREE admission, hotdogs for .25 cents and good old Rock and Roll music with the Andy Chase Cundiff band.
In addition you can visit with our keepers as they talk about some of your favorite animals, watch a wildlife show, or stop at one of our animal encounter areas.
Need to satisfy the sweet tooth? Belmar Bakery has made a delicious cake in honor of the Zoo’s birthday and servings will be given out while the supply lasts.
Don’t forget your cameras, because Snow White will be here and we’ll have a special photo op area set up by the Zoo’s original entrance in 1955 known as Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs Mountain.
We hope to see you there!
Admission for this event is FREE!
