    “Purple Martin Conservation”

    Guest Speaker Jim Ray, Pantex Wildlife Biologist and Chief Biologist for Purple Martin Conservation Association

    Jim Ray, a native of Dalhart, is a 25-year veteran of Texas Panhandle’s Wildlife Management and Research Community. After degrees from Texas Tech University and South Dakota State University, Jim spent 9 years as Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Migratory Birds and Wetlands Biologist for the 77 counties that make up northwest Texas. He has spent the last 15 years as the Wildlife Biologist for Pantex, landing the U. S. Department of Energy facility three agency nominations for the annual Presidential Migratory Bird Federal Stewardship Award.

    In his spare time, Jim doubles as the Chief Wildlife Biologist of the international 501c3 non-profit, the Purple Martin Conservation Association, which is based in Erie, PA. Jim has banded more than 10,000 of these migratory songbirds and in collaboration with a large partnership across North America is tracking them year-round, learning of their year-round needs, including in Central and South America.  Jim has authored or co-authored more than two dozen journal and magazine articles on the species including the two-time publication of the year winner, The Purple Martin and Its Management in Texas.  Jim and his wife Susan live between Amarillo and Canyon and host a colony of close to 60 pairs of Purple Martins each year.

    Easter EGG-citement

    Hop on over to the Amarillo Zoo for our annual Easter EGG-citment! event. Kids can visit one of many treat stations to receive their Easter eggs filled with candy and goodies from costumed characters like Alice, the Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts, the March Hare, Bugs Bunny and others. Make sure to stop by and get your picture taken with the Easter Bunny. Plus, don’t be late for a very important date … the Alice in Wonderland Tea Party!  Watch our lemurs, lions, tigers and other zoo animals enjoy their very own Easter baskets filled with special treats. All that plus live bunnies for kids to see and touch!

     $5 per person

    Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo!

    1:00pm – 4:00pm

    The Amarillo Zoo in collaboration with area animal rescue and care organizations will host an event “Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo” on Saturday, April 25 from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Dogs and cats will be available looking for that forever home plus exhibits on pet health care, equine rescue, pet resources plus activities on making pet enrichment toys!
